I was getting ready to go to the CILIP NW Revalidation event last week and was trying to sort out the list of my CPD reading so I can add the books to my CPD Log. I thought I’d share them with you. Because… well just because really. 🙂 Might be useful.

Books I've read
The Read Pile

Team Building

Work and Occupational Psychology: Integrating Theory and Practice*
Rachel Lewis, Lara Zibarras
SAGE, 2013

Group Dynamics for Teams
Daniel Levi
SAGE, 2010

Brilliant Teams
Douglas Miller
Pearson, 2013

Harvard Business Review on Building Better Teams
Harvard Business Review
Harvard Business Press, 2011

I like the Brilliant series a lot. (You can see from the photo) Usually they are very practical and straightforward books and this one was useful. Although I liked bits from all of these books, my other favourite was the HBR book. Great stuff that you can apply.

Cultural Intelligence

Cultural Intelligence: Living and Working Globally
David C. Thomas, Kerr C. Inkson
Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2009

Emotional Intelligence

Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are
Amy Cuddy
[Online] Available: http://new.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are. TED Talk, 2012 [Accessed 27/04/15]

Brilliant Emotional Intelligence
Gill Hasson
Pearson, 2012

Put Emotional Intelligence to Work: EQuip Yourself for Success
Jeff Feldman, Karl Mulle.
ASTD Press, 2007

Mindfulness: Be mindful. Live in the moment.
Gill Hasson
John Wiley & Sons, 2013

Daniel Goleman Omnibus (Emotional Intelligence and Working with Emotional Intelligence)
Daniel Goleman
Bloomsbury, 2004

I found the Amy Cuddy talk to be really helpful but also moving and inspirational. I like Gill Hasson’s emotional intelligence (EI) book a lot and I was reading another book on Mindfulness that I was struggling with,(a proper ‘kill me now’) when I found out that Hasson had written one too. I went and got it straight away. Gill Hasson does the touchy feely stuff in a way that I can understand without being too touchy or  too feely. The Feldman and Mulle book is a practical guide and Daniel Goleman is THE EI god.

Behaviour

Getting the Buggers to Behave
Sue Cowley
A&C Black, 2010

I did EI, train the trainer and customer service courses for a group of predominately FE librarians who were struggling with student behaviour. This book really helped.

and a random book on self-help

The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking
Oliver Burkman
Canongate, 2012

I hate self help books. (See previous comment on touchy feeliness) This made me laugh out loud on the bus. Oliver Burkeman is columnist for the Observer. (Or maybe the Guardian.) (Or the Observer, I can’t remember but you get the picture). It was recommended to me by Joy Palmer. It is very sensible and debunks a lot of the self-help stuff you’ve heard of but, takes the useful bits out so you can just do those bits. Without having to read the crap. Oliver did it, so you don’t have to.

*No I didn’t write any of these in a particular ref style**

**Yes I’m a librarian. Yes I probably should have done. I didn’t.***

***I wrote sample chapters for an online tutorial on different styles of referencing last year, and now I don’t think I could pick an actual style to use if my life depended on it.****
